Where did Birthstones originate?
Birthstones originated from a high priest named Cohen Gadol. Cohen had a breastplate with twelve stones(birthstones) on it, a stone for each of the tribes of Israel. Each tribe was assigned a zodiac according to the Egyptian calender. After a period of time, after the Julian Calender system was developed, the birthstones list for the zodiac month was transposed to the corresponding calender months. In 1912, the American National Jewlers Association made a list of birthstones for months in the calender.

January- Garnet
February- Amethyst
March- Bloodstone and Aquamarine
April- Diamond
May- Emerald
June- Pearl, Moonstone and Alexandrite
July- Ruby
August- Sardonyx and Peridot
September- Sapphire
October- Opal and Tourmaline
November- Topaz and Citrine
December- Turquoise and Zircon
You can see that there are a lot of birthstones. Also, each birthstone includes different minerals and is a different color.

Rank the Birthstones in terms of their value.
Diamonds are the most valuable gemstone, but rubies, sapphires, and emeralds are also valuable, if not as or more valuable. These gemstones are ranked by their quality and color. Diamonds are priced based on their cut, color, clarity, and carat weight. Pearls are also valuable. The most valuable pearls are the white and the silvery - white saltwater pearls. Next in line would be the opals. Opals vary in price, but the most valuable is the rare black opal. The cloudier white opals are less valuable. Garnet and topaz are ranked about the same, but depending on the color of the stone garnets can be priced higher. The other gemstones of aquamarine, amethyst, peridot, tourmaline, citrine and zircon all are valued about the same, but they can vary in price alittle depending on their color and quality. All of these gemstones are valuable, but some are more valuable than others. Again, they are ranked in value depending on their color and quality.
